Burke Syphax, MD

Burke Syphax – graduated from Howard University College of Medicine in 1936 and went on to lead Howard University’s Department of Surgery for more than a decade during one of its most difficult periods. He continued the programs Dr. Charles Drew initiated prior to his death and provided steady leadership that ensured Howard would continue to train surgeons. He taught thousands of medical students and trained an estimated 90 percent of black surgeons in the Washington area.
