Furman Jeremiah Shadd – received his undergraduate, master’s degrees at Howard and became a Doctor of Medicine on March 1, 1881. He was valedictorian of both classes. He went on to become assistant professor of physiology and was later appointed professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics and professor of clinical gynecology for Howard University Medical College. He was also appointed assistant surgeon and resident physician at Freedman’s Hospital. His son, Furman Julien Shadd, graduated from Howard Medical school in 1907 and became a physician.
